School girl Yumi Hanazono is a dab hand with drawing. Her parents run a florist shop and cafe from their house and from them Yumi has also inherited a love of flowers. Two cat-like elves from the Flower Planet reward her devotion with a magical wand and pendant that, when she draws the shape of an object in the air with the wand, create the object for her use for a short time before vanishing.
Like any young girl, Yumi has challenges in her life - family, school, boys and even irascible neighbours. Her new magical power offers a tempting solution to these challenges but she must beware of the consequences and watch out for the magic wearing off.

Where it came from
Pastel Yumi, the Magic Idol was produced by Studio Pierrot and aired in 1986 as the third installment in their popular 'Magical Girl' series. Following the success of Creamy Mami and Magical Emi, this series aimed to capitalize on the audience's affinity for young girls who could transform into adult versions of themselves to solve problems using magical items, in this case, a wand and pendant that allowed Yumi to manifest her drawings into reality.
The character design was handled by the studio's internal creative team, reflecting the bright, pastel-heavy aesthetic that defined mid-1980s Japanese shojo anime. While the series was designed to appeal to a younger demographic through its whimsical premise and emphasis on creative expression, it is often noted by historians for its gentle, slice-of-life tone, which contrasted with the more intense narrative arcs found in other magical girl series of the same era.
