Peleliu: Rakuen no Guernica

Peleliu: Rakuen no Guernica was produced in 2025 by Studio Fugaku as an adaptation of Kazuyuki Takeda’s historical manga series, which is itself based on the original manga by Masao Kazutoshi. The work serves as a somber exploration of the Battle of Peleliu during the Pacific War, focusing on the harrowing psychological and physical toll of the conflict on young Japanese soldiers tasked with defending the island. The narrative is heavily influenced by the 'Guernica' aesthetic, aiming to transpose the raw, anti-war sentiment of Picasso’s masterpiece into a visual medium that emphasizes the tragic absurdity of combat.

The film was crafted to preserve the distinct, deceptively simple art style of the manga, which contrasts starkly with the brutal subject matter to evoke a profound sense of melancholy. Design choices focused on grounding the historical setting in accurate period detail while maintaining the emotional transparency of the source material. Upon its release, the project received significant critical attention for its delicate handling of sensitive historical themes, with many reviewers praising the animation for its ability to maintain a reflective, human-centered perspective rather than focusing solely on the spectacle of warfare.
