Planetes Picture Drama

The Planetes Picture Drama was produced by Sunrise in 2009 as a special bonus inclusion for the Japanese Blu-ray box set release of the acclaimed hard science-fiction anime series. Originally airing in 2003, the series was adapted from Makoto Yukimura's manga and gained a cult following for its grounded, realistic depiction of space debris collectors living and working in Earth's orbit. This supplemental content was created to revisit the characters several years after the conclusion of the television series, offering fans a reflective bridge between the show's finale and its long-term legacy.

The design and narrative tone of the Picture Drama were intended to maintain the contemplative, humanistic atmosphere that defined the original production. Featuring the returning voice cast and maintaining the series' signature aesthetic, the special focuses on character-driven dialogue and static, high-quality illustrations rather than traditional animation. It was received by the community as a poignant epilogue, valued by collectors for its role in providing closure and depth to the relationships established during the primary run of the series.
