Where it came from
Released in 2014 by OLM, Inc., Pikachu, What's This Key? serves as the seventeenth entry in the long-running series of Pokémon short films traditionally screened alongside the annual feature-length movies. Designed to showcase the whimsical nature of the franchise, the short follows Pikachu and his friends as they encounter the Mythical Pokémon Klefki, whose ability to conjure portals through keys provides the central narrative hook for the adventure.
The production maintains the aesthetic standards established by the animation team at OLM, emphasizing vibrant colors and expressive character movements intended to appeal to younger audiences. Upon its release alongside Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction, the short was received as a lighthearted, self-contained escapade that highlighted the unique designs of the Generation VI Pokémon roster, specifically focusing on the then-newly introduced Fairy-type creatures.
