Professor Sycamore and Alexa explore some ruins, where they discover a stone statue of a woman named Aila, and a legend emerges. A collection of Kalos records reveals that Aila's true love, Jan, attempted to vanquish the Destruction Pokémon Yveltal. When he failed, the land was drained of all life as Yveltal became a cocoon and turned Aila to stone.
Jan continued his quest, seeking out the Life Pokémon Xerneas to replenish the barren land—although it couldn't save Aila. When Kalos seemed hopelessly out of balance, the Order Pokémon Zygarde appeared to restore it, and Jan remained at Aila’s side as the cycle of life and destruction continued.

Where it came from
Pokémon the Series: XYZ Specials, released in 2016, serve as concluding epilogues to the Kalos region narrative arc. These episodes were produced by The Pokémon Company International to provide closure for Ash Ketchum and his companions following the high-stakes conflict involving Team Flare. By shifting the focus away from the main quest, the specials allowed for intimate character moments and a transition toward the Alola region setting.
The animation and narrative direction were handled by the core OLM, Inc. team responsible for the XYZ series. The design philosophy emphasized emotional resonance over traditional gym battles, focusing on the future paths of characters like Clemont, Bonnie, and Serena. The episodes were generally received as a poignant send-off, appreciated by the community for their restrained storytelling and the definitive character development they offered to the supporting cast.
