Where it came from
Pokke is a mascot character associated with NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, specifically serving as a representative figure for its educational and children's programming initiatives. The character was developed as part of the network's long tradition of using anthropomorphic icons to bridge the gap between institutional broadcasting and its younger audience, providing a consistent visual identity for various segments throughout the day.
The design of Pokke follows the aesthetic conventions of late 20th and early 21st-century Japanese mascot culture, which emphasizes approachable, soft geometric shapes and a cheerful, non-threatening persona. It was crafted to be highly recognizable on screen, utilizing a simple color palette and distinct features intended to foster a sense of familiarity and reliability among children interacting with NHK's diverse catalog of programming.
