Porco Rosso

Porco Rosso was conceived by Hayao Miyazaki as a brief project intended for Japan Airlines' in-flight entertainment, based on his own manga series, Hikōtei Jidai. Released in 1992, the film evolved into a feature-length exploration of post-World War I Italy, capturing the melancholy of the Great Depression alongside Miyazaki’s deep-seated passion for early 20th-century aviation. The narrative follows a world-weary bounty hunter who has been cursed with the head of a pig, serving as a poignant meditation on disillusionment, pacifism, and personal redemption.

The film’s aesthetic was heavily influenced by the Mediterranean landscape and the technological romanticism of pre-war seaplanes, with production design overseen by art director Katsuya Kondo.
