Where it came from
Princess Army: Wedding Combat is a two-episode original video animation produced by J.C. Staff and released in 1992. Emerging during the height of the OVA market's expansion in Japan, the series was designed to blend traditional shoujo-inspired aesthetics with the irreverent, action-oriented humor popular in 1990s anime. It represents a period where studios frequently experimented with niche, genre-bending concepts intended to capture the interest of the growing home video rental market.
The production sought to subvert expectations by juxtaposing the delicate imagery of princess archetypes with the grit of military mercenary operations. While the character designs reflect the soft, expressive linework typical of the era, the narrative leans into satire, contrasting the formal elegance of wedding culture with chaotic battle sequences. Upon its release, it was received as a lighthearted, curiosity-driven entry in J.C. Staff's early catalog, often remembered today as a distinct artifact of the eclectic OVA era rather than a mainstream breakout.
