Where it came from
Prison School: Mad Wax was released in 2016 as an original video animation accompanying the limited edition release of the twentieth volume of Akira Hiramoto's manga series. Produced by the studio J.C.Staff, the episode serves as an extension of the 2015 television anime adaptation, maintaining the same staff and cast to preserve the stylistic consistency of the high-energy, absurd comedy that defined the series.
The animation was directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, who sought to translate Hiramoto's highly detailed and exaggerated manga aesthetic into a fluid, kinetic visual experience. The content focuses on the peculiar social dynamics of the Hachimitsu Academy, leaning into the franchise's reputation for over-the-top situational humor. While the series as a whole polarized audiences due to its provocative themes, the technical direction of the animation was noted for its adherence to the intense, dramatic framing of the source material.
