But with the new school year comes a revision to school policy: Boys are to be admitted into the student body for the first time ever. But on his first day at Hachimitsu, Kiyoshi Fujino discovers that he's one of only five boys enrolled at the school. Where it came from
Prison School, produced by the studio J.C.Staff and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, premiered in 2015 as an adaptation of Akira Hiramoto's manga series. The project was conceived as a high-octane blend of transgressive comedy and intense psychological drama, centering on the experiences of five boys who enroll in a prestigious, formerly all-female boarding school. The adaptation is notable for its deliberate shift in tone, mirroring the manga's transition from surreal humor to escalating, absurd scenarios.
The production team, known for their versatility in varied genres, leaned heavily into a visually distinct style that emphasized exaggerated character expressions and dynamic, cinematic framing. This aesthetic choice was intended to heighten the sense of mounting panic and claustrophobia experienced by the protagonists. Upon its release, the series received attention for its bold creative choices and technical execution, often sparking discourse regarding its provocative subject matter and its place within the broader landscape of mid-2010s seinen anime.
