Where it came from
Promare was released in 2019 as the debut feature film from Studio Trigger, marking a creative reunion between director Hiroyuki Imaishi and screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima. The project was conceived as an original high-octane spectacle that distilled the signature kinetic energy, bold color palettes, and thematic preoccupations with rebellion and evolution that the team had previously explored in series like Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill.
The film's distinct aesthetic was heavily influenced by the art style of designer Shigeto Koyama, who utilized a vivid, flat-shaded visual language inspired by modernist graphic design and mid-century aesthetics. Upon its release, Promare was praised for its technical fluidity and its ability to synthesize complex world-building with an accessible, character-driven narrative, eventually establishing itself as a notable entry in the studio's catalog for its experimental approach to cel-shaded 3D animation.
