Qin Shi Mingyue: Bai Bu Fei Jian

Qin Shi Mingyue, or The Legend of Qin, emerged in 2007 as a pioneering force in Chinese 3D animation, produced by Sparkly Key Animation. The series draws its inspiration from the historical novel by Wen Shiren, centering on the transition of the Qin Dynasty. The title Bai Bu Fei Jian refers to a legendary sword technique depicted within the show, which became a signature element of the narrative, symbolizing the high-stakes martial arts choreography and the wuxia aesthetic that the studio sought to establish as a new standard for domestic animation.

The production team, led by studio founder Shen Leping, focused on blending traditional Chinese philosophy and historical storytelling with modern visual techniques. The design and artistic direction were aimed at creating a distinct cultural identity that resonated with a younger generation, moving away from international styles to embrace a localized epic fantasy feel. Upon its release, the series received significant attention for its technical ambition, eventually growing into a massive multimedia franchise that redefined the commercial viability of long-form CGI animation in China.
