Where it came from
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubō no Shichinin is a 2010 anime series produced by Madhouse, adapted from the manga written by George Abe and illustrated by Masasumi Kakizaki. Set in post-World War II Japan, the series follows seven teenagers incarcerated in a brutal reformatory school in 1955. The narrative focuses on their struggle for survival against systemic corruption and violence, capturing the bleak atmosphere of a country grappling with the aftermath of war and societal reconstruction.
The animation was directed by Hiroshi Kōjina, who sought to translate Kakizaki’s gritty, hyper-realistic art style into a fluid television format. The production was critically noted for its uncompromising depiction of trauma and the deep bond formed between the protagonists. While the show explored mature and often distressing themes, it garnered a dedicated following for its emotional depth and its departure from typical shōnen tropes, remaining a significant entry in Madhouse's historical drama portfolio.
