Where it came from
Rakshasa Street, or Zhen Hun Jie, originated as a popular manhua by Xu Chen before being adapted into a 3D animated series produced by L² Studio. The second season, which debuted in 2019, continued the story of Cao Yanbing, a spirit commander tasked with guarding the Rakshasa Street, a mystical location where human and spirit worlds intersect. The production sought to elevate the visual fidelity of the series, moving toward a more polished character design and fluid combat choreography to match the high-stakes narrative of the source material.
The animation style of the second season reflects a deliberate attempt by L² Studio to balance dark, supernatural aesthetics with the dynamic action sequences characteristic of the shonen-adjacent genre. While the season faced challenges regarding production pacing and shifts in creative direction, it remains a significant entry in the landscape of Chinese web animation. It is widely recognized for its contribution to the mainstreaming of domestic 3D animation, aiming to capture the gravity and internal conflict of its central characters through detailed atmospheric world-building.
