Based on the erotic game by Alice Soft.
While Rance might well be one of the best swordsmen in the world, he has the personality of a rancid turd. He is narcissistic, lecherous, abusive and almost without any redeeming social graces. And his underclad and overabused slavegirl Sill knows this, but she is still in love with him. One day Rance is hired to defend a dusty and forsaken desert village from the repeated attacks of scantly clad and oversexed sorceress intent on the resurrection of a long forgotten deamon.

Where it came from
Released in 1993, Rance: Sabaku no Guardian is an original video animation based on the long-running Rance erotic role-playing game series developed by Alice Soft. The production was intended to capitalize on the rising popularity of the franchise, which had gained a cult following in the Japanese PC gaming market for its blend of fantasy adventure, dark humor, and adult themes. By adapting the game into an animated format, Alice Soft sought to broaden the reach of its flagship character, Rance, who is characterized as an anti-heroic, womanizing mercenary.
The animation was produced during a period when many adult-oriented visual novel properties were being adapted for the direct-to-video market. Its aesthetic reflects the early 1990s anime style, emphasizing the distinct character designs found in the original game illustrations. While the OVA is remembered primarily by dedicated fans of the Alice Soft library, it represents a specific moment in the history of interactive media adaptations, demonstrating how early software developers attempted to translate complex, narrative-heavy games into linear storytelling mediums.
