Synopsis

This film is based on an ancient legend of the Qiang, an ethnic minority living in the mountainous regions of southwest China. It tells the story of a monkey who grows up among humans and follows the footsteps of his mother, Awubaji, to the Holy Mountain to uncover the secret of warmth. After undergoing many hardships and dangers, the monkey manages to get hold of a fire stone. His fur burns off and he finally turns into a human being. The film is rendered in the style of traditional Chinese ink painting and poetically envisions life in a prehistoric society. The story of the fire thief addresses timeless themes, such as growth and companionship, which are still important today. With Ran Bi Wa, the legendary Shanghai Animation Film Studio, birthplace of many iconic Chinese animations, is celebrating a triumphant return.

Provenance

Where it came from

Ran is a 1985 epic historical drama directed by Akira Kurosawa, representing his late-career masterpiece and a culmination of his lifelong fascination with the intersection of power, betrayal, and human folly. Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s King Lear and the legends of the Japanese daimyo Mōri Motonari, the film tells the story of an aging warlord who abdicates his throne to his three sons, only to be plunged into a brutal cycle of civil war. Kurosawa conceived the project over a decade before production, during which time he meticulously storyboarded the film as a series of complex paintings, treating the cinematic frame as a canvas for his vision of medieval chaos.

The production design, led by Yoshirō Muraki and Shinobu Muraki with costumes by Emi Wada, is widely cited for its innovative use of vibrant, non-naturalistic color palettes to distinguish the three sons' factions. This aesthetic choice served to guide the audience through the dense narrative and emphasize the theatricality of the tragedy. Upon its release, the film was received as a towering achievement in global cinema, earning Emi Wada an Academy Award for Best Costume Design and solidifying Kurosawa’s status as a master of visual storytelling who could blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with the grand, Shakespearean scale of Western drama.
