Ranma ½: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China

Released in 1991, Ranma ½: Big Trouble in Nekonron, China serves as the first feature-length theatrical outing for Rumiko Takahashi's celebrated gender-bending martial arts comedy series. Produced by Studio Kitty and animated by Studio Deen, the film was developed to capitalize on the immense popularity of the television series during the peak of the 1990s anime boom in Japan. The plot follows Ranma Saotome and his associates as they travel to China to rescue Akane Tendo, who has been kidnapped by a prince seeking to force her into marriage, a narrative choice that highlights the series' hallmark blend of high-stakes action and whimsical romantic misunderstandings.

The production design captures the vibrant, expressive aesthetic of the source manga while scaling up the visual fidelity for the cinema screen. Director Tomomi Mochizuki focused on maintaining the frenetic pacing and slapstick physical comedy that defined the television episodes, ensuring that the transition to film felt like an expanded, premium installment rather than a departure from the established tone. While the film was received as a lighthearted expansion of the franchise rather than a critical reimagining, it remains a notable artifact of early 90s animation, representing the era when high-profile television anime series began regularly bridging the gap into cinematic feature presentations.
