Where it came from
Rilakkuma's Theme Park Adventure was released in 2022 as a stop-motion animated ONA, serving as a sequel to the 2019 series Rilakkuma and Kaoru. Produced by TYO Animations, the series was commissioned by Netflix to expand the tranquil, slice-of-life world created by San-X. The production utilized the same meticulous stop-motion techniques as its predecessor, focusing on the charm of physical puppets set against handcrafted, miniature environments.
The series was directed by Masahito Kobayashi, who aimed to maintain the gentle, contemplative aesthetic that defines the Rilakkuma franchise. By centering the narrative on the characters' visit to an amusement park, the design team emphasized lighting and texture to capture a nostalgic, whimsical atmosphere. The project received positive critical reception for its high technical quality and its ability to translate the mascot's brand of comfort into a narrative-driven streaming format.
