Where it came from
Robot Girls Z Plus was released in 2015 as a direct sequel to the 2014 Robot Girls Z series. Produced by Toei Animation, this ONA series serves as a comedic, anthropomorphic reimagining of classic Go Nagai mecha franchises, specifically Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, and UFO Robot Grendizer. The project was intended to revitalize interest in these vintage properties by blending traditional super robot tropes with the popular 'moe' aesthetic of modern anime, targeting an audience that appreciates self-referential humor and meta-commentary.
The character designs were overseen by Tetsuya Kawakami, who focused on translating the iconic silhouettes and color palettes of the original robots into distinct, vibrant character outfits. The series was met with a niche but appreciative reception, lauded by fans of retro mecha for its playful tone and willingness to lampoon the serious nature of its source material. It occupies a unique space in Toei's catalog as a experimental spin-off that successfully bridged the gap between legacy animation and contemporary digital streaming trends.
