Where it came from
The Robot Girls Z Petit Chara series was produced by Toei Animation as a promotional and collectible tie-in to the 2014 Robot Girls Z original video animation series. The project was designed to reimagine classic Super Robot mecha from the 1970s—specifically those from Go Nagai’s Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, and UFO Robot Grendizer—as anthropomorphic anime girls, blending nostalgia with the hyper-stylized aesthetic of contemporary idol-centric animation.
These miniature figures were created to capitalize on the chibi-style character redesigns handled by artist Tetsuya Kawakami. The design goal was to translate the gritty, mechanical look of the original robotic titans into a soft, approachable, and playful format that would appeal to fans of high-detail desktop collectibles. Upon release, the figures were received as a niche but effective bridge between older generations of mecha enthusiasts and the modern 'moe' subculture prevalent in Japanese character goods at the time.
