Robot Taekwon V: Wooju Jakjeon

Released in 1978, Robot Taekwon V: Wooju Jakjeon, or Space Mission, represents the second installment in the influential South Korean animated franchise centered on the giant fighting robot Taekwon V. Following the immense domestic success of the original 1976 film, director Kim Cheong-gi sought to expand the franchise into the science fiction genre, capitalizing on the global fascination with space exploration and extraterrestrial conflict that permeated pop culture in the late seventies.

The film was designed to blend the traditional martial arts themes of the original with more ambitious, outer-space narrative elements. While the character design for Taekwon V remained grounded in its signature taekwondo-inspired aesthetic, the production incorporated space-age visual motifs to appeal to a younger audience. Despite the technical limitations of the period, the film remains a notable entry in Korean animation history, marking a transitional phase where domestic studios began experimenting with higher-concept science fiction storytelling.
