Where it came from
Rocket Girls was produced by Mook Animation and released in 2007 as an anime television series. It is based on a series of light novels written by Housuke Nojiri, which explore the premise of a private space agency recruiting high school girls to serve as astronauts due to their low body mass, which reduces launch costs. The narrative balances lighthearted school life tropes with a surprisingly grounded focus on the technical and physical realities of space travel.
The anime adaptation was directed by Masayuki Ozeki and aimed to capture the charm of Nojiri's original concept while translating the technical jargon of rocketry into an accessible visual medium. The production received attention for its commitment to scientific accuracy regarding orbital mechanics and space flight physics, a rare trait for an anime centered on a comedic premise. Upon its release, the series was recognized by niche audiences for its unique fusion of 'magical girl' character archetypes and hard science fiction elements.
