This anime was made by Hudson Soft, which created the "Star Soldier" game. Its designer, Yoichi Takahashi, appeared in a cameo and sang the theme songs.
By coincidence, the film was released the same day as "Super Mario Brothers," also based on a video game.
The film was a box-office failure in Japan.

Where it came from
Running Boy: Star Soldier no Himitsu was released by Toho in 1986 as a tie-in feature for the Hudson Soft video game Star Soldier. Produced during the burgeoning era of Famicom-related multimedia projects, the film was designed to leverage the popularity of the game among the Japanese youth demographic by weaving a narrative that incorporated the gameplay mechanics and the competitive spirit of the Star Soldier game festivals.
The film represents a unique intersection of 1980s gaming culture and anime production. It follows a young protagonist who gains supernatural abilities related to the game's high-speed action, reflecting the era's focus on the 'game champion' archetype. While it served primarily as promotional material for the Hudson Soft brand, it remains a notable artifact for those documenting the history of the early video game boom in Japan and the experimental marketing strategies employed by film studios and software developers at the time.
