Ruriiro Princess

Ruriiro Princess, or Azure-Colored Princess, was released in 1992 as a direct-to-video original animation production by Studio Pierrot. During this era, the studio was capitalizing on the commercial viability of the OVA market, which allowed for experimental storytelling and niche aesthetic explorations outside the constraints of television broadcast. The project emerged from a period of high productivity for Pierrot, following their successes with series like YuYu Hakusho and Urusei Yatsura, aiming to capture the market for romantic fantasy narratives that favored high-quality character designs.

The visual direction for Ruriiro Princess emphasizes the soft, ornate character styling typical of early nineties shojo-leaning animation. The production was intended to showcase the studio's technical proficiency in cel-painted animation and fluid movement, often cited by collectors as a quintessential example of the aesthetic trends of the early nineties. While the title remains a relatively deep cut within the vast Pierrot filmography, it serves as a historical artifact of the studio's stylistic transition during a time when short-form OVA storytelling was a primary vehicle for creative output.
