An animated motion picture about a real-life Buddhist monk and renowned poet, Ryoukan who lived in 18th century Japan, during the Edo Period. Though born to a wealthy family in Izumozaki, Ryoukan chooses to abandon the easy life he would have inherited in order to understand the true meaning of life through the teachings of Buddhism. From his early adulthood, he undergoes a series of harsh training that demands a solitary and meager lifestyle. Throughout it all, he remains an extremely modest and humble person, a true humanitarian who accepts every individual for who they are while rejecting all worldly fame and wealth. Ryoukan found true peace in life through nature and spending time with children. His pure mind and affable personality have captivated many, and his legacy and the wisdom of his teachings live on today.

Where it came from
Ryoukan-san is a short animated film produced by Studio Pierrot, an institution renowned for its contributions to the golden age of Japanese television animation. The project serves as an example of the studio's interest in short-form, artistic storytelling that deviates from their more commercial, long-running shonen series. Created as a standalone narrative, the film explores atmospheric and emotive visual techniques that prioritize mood and character nuance over traditional action-oriented animation tropes.
The artistic direction for Ryoukan-san reflects the meticulous aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-to-late 20th-century Japanese animation industry, where character designs were often kept clean and expressive to facilitate fluid movement. While Studio Pierrot is frequently associated with high-octane hits, this particular film is widely regarded by animation historians and enthusiasts as a demonstration of the studio's technical range, showcasing a softer, more introspective side of their production capabilities.
