Where it came from
Saber Marionette J Again is a six-episode original video animation series released in 1997, serving as a direct sequel to the popular Saber Marionette J television anime. Produced by Hal Film Maker, the series continues the narrative of Otaru Mamiya and his three marionettes—Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry—on the planet Terra II. It was created to satisfy fan demand for a continuation of the lighthearted yet action-oriented sci-fi drama that defined the franchise throughout the late nineties.
The series retains the characteristic character designs of Tsukasa Kotobuki, whose work was central to the aesthetic of the Saber Marionette universe. The production focused on refining the established dynamic between the human protagonist and his advanced android companions, aiming to provide a more conclusive emotional arc for the characters. Upon its release, it was received as a nostalgic expansion of the source material, appreciated by viewers for maintaining the tone and visual style of the original series while concluding specific narrative threads left open by the television broadcast.
