Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid

Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid was released in 1991 as an animated television series produced by the Japanese studio Fuji Eight and Saban Entertainment. It emerged during a period of intense interest in Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, arriving shortly after the success of Disney's 1989 film adaptation. The series was designed to offer a distinct, episodic take on the source material, leaning into traditional anime aesthetics to appeal to an international market through Saban's established distribution networks.

The character design and visual direction were heavily influenced by the style of early 1990s Japanese animation, focusing on a more serialized narrative structure compared to feature-length versions of the story. While the series did not achieve the same cultural saturation as high-profile big-screen adaptations, it remains a notable example of the era's global animation trade, reflecting the collaborative efforts between Japanese animation houses and Western distributors to fill television programming blocks.
