Saikyou Bushouden: Sangoku Engi

Saikyou Bushouden: Sangoku Engi was released in 2009 as a collaborative effort between Japanese and Chinese production studios, including Future Planet. The series was designed to adapt the classic 14th-century Chinese historical epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, for a contemporary audience. It sought to balance the grandeur of the original text with a modern animation style intended to appeal to younger viewers in both Japan and China.

The production utilized a digital aesthetic that was common for television animation of the late 2000s, aiming to bring tactical battles and legendary heroes to life with a sense of fluid action. While it aimed for broad cultural reach, the series remains a niche entry within the vast catalog of Three Kingdoms adaptations, noted primarily for its specific attempt at international co-production during a period of expanding creative exchange between the two nations.
