Where it came from
Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas is a spin-off of Masami Kurumada’s seminal manga, focusing on the eighteenth-century Holy War between Athena and Hades. The second season, released as an original video animation (OVA) series in 2011, continues the narrative established in the first season by TMS Entertainment, adapting Shiori Teshirogi’s manga. This iteration is often praised for its distinct aesthetic, which diverges from the classic 1980s Saint Seiya style to embrace a more fluid, modern animation look that emphasizes dramatic character dynamics.
The production was spearheaded by director Osamu Nabeshima, who aimed to imbue the series with a darker, more emotionally charged tone than the original anime. By focusing on the bond between the protagonist Tenma and his friend-turned-adversary Alone, the series sought to explore the themes of destiny and tragedy inherent in the mythos. While the series garnered a dedicated following for its high-quality animation and musical score, it remains a notable entry in the franchise for its specific artistic departure from the main timeline.
