Synopsis

In northern Europe, the reincarnation of Odin, Dolbar, rules supreme. One day, Hyoga rescues a man in Siberia so warns him about trouble in the Asgard. Athena goes out to investigate and sends Hyoga in advance but when she and the others arrive at the Asgard, Hyoga is nowhere to be found. When Dolbar captures Athena to take control of the sanctuary, the bronze saints try to help her but are attacked by the God Warriors.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in March 1988 as the second theatrical feature film for the Saint Seiya franchise, The Heated Battle of the Gods was produced by Toei Animation during the height of the original series' popularity. The film serves as a side story that does not strictly adhere to the chronology of Masami Kurumada’s manga, instead opting for a self-contained narrative set in the icy region of Asgard, which predates the formal Asgard arc later adapted for the television anime.

The film was directed by Kouzou Morishita, a veteran of the Toei stable who aimed to capitalize on the high-octane cinematic potential of the series by introducing original God Warriors and a darker, more atmospheric environment. While it received a modest reception from critics who noted its similarities to the show's standard formula, it remains a notable example of late-eighties shonen film production, characterized by the distinct character designs of Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno that defined the aesthetic of the Saint Seiya brand.
