Saishuu Shiken Kujira

Saishuu Shiken Kujira, or Final Examination: Whale, was released in 2007 as a three-part original net animation series produced by Starchild Records. The project was conceived as an adaptation of the visual novel series originally developed by Circus, a studio well known within the visual novel community for their fantasy-themed narratives. The anime serves as a companion piece to the broader franchise, aiming to translate the game's whimsical yet melancholic atmosphere into a serialized digital format during a period when the distribution of ONA content was beginning to see increased experimentation by major studios.

The production sought to capture the aesthetic sensibilities typical of mid-2000s light novel and visual novel adaptations, characterized by character-driven storytelling and supernatural motifs. Design duties leaned heavily on the established visual identity of the original games, ensuring continuity for the existing fanbase. While the series did not achieve widespread mainstream success, it remains a notable example of the era's trend of utilizing the internet to extend the reach of niche gaming intellectual properties beyond their original interactive medium.
