Where it came from
Saiyuki Gunlock was produced by Studio Pierrot and aired in 2004 as the second television adaptation of Kazuya Minekura’s popular manga series. Following the success of the 2000 series, this iteration continues the journey of the monk Genjo Sanzo and his three companions—Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai—as they travel westward to stop a mysterious plague of negative energy causing demons to go berserk.
The series maintains the aesthetic established in the earlier adaptation, balancing character-driven drama with supernatural action. Under the direction of Eriko Miura, the production team sought to deepen the bonds between the core cast members while navigating the dark, road-trip narrative style that defined Minekura’s work. Upon release, it was received as a faithful expansion of the Saiyuki lore, appreciated for its character development and the dynamic chemistry of its four leads.
