Where it came from
Sakon the Ventriloquist, known in Japan as Karakuri no Kimi, was produced by WOWOW and aired in 1999 as a suspense-filled mystery series. The story revolves around Ukon Tachibana, a talented young ventriloquist who solves crimes with the help of his cynical wooden puppet, Sakon. The series is grounded in the aesthetic of late 90s Japanese animation, blending traditional performance arts with the gritty, episodic detective genre.
The character design and atmosphere were heavily influenced by the original manga series by Masaru Miyazaki and Takeshi Obata. Obata, who later gained international acclaim for Death Note, brought a distinct sense of detail to the puppet's expressions, emphasizing the uncanny interplay between the human puppeteer and his inanimate partner. Upon its release, the series was received as a stylistic departure for the mystery genre, lauded for its unconventional premise and the sophisticated interplay between the two leads.
