Sakura Taisen: Kanadegumi

Sakura Taisen: Kanadegumi was produced in 2012 by A-1 Pictures as an OVA adaptation of the manga series of the same name. Released during a period when the broader Sakura Taisen franchise was seeking to expand its reach beyond the established Imperial Combat Revue, this project pivoted toward a shojo-inspired aesthetic, focusing on an all-male ensemble cast set within a theatrical troupe in Taisho-era Tokyo. The transition from the series' traditional strategy-RPG roots to a character-driven narrative was intended to capture a younger demographic while maintaining the period-piece charm characteristic of the franchise.

The character designs were handled by the manga's original artist, Chika Shiomi, who aimed to integrate the soft, stylistic sensibilities typical of josei and shojo manga into the familiar Sakura Taisen visual vocabulary. By shifting the focus to a male-led music and performance group, the series departed from the franchise's historical reliance on the female-fronted Flower Division. While the OVA served as a concise entry point for the Kanadegumi sub-series, it was received primarily as a niche curiosity by established fans who remained deeply attached to the foundational entries of the long-running property.
