Where it came from
Sakura no Ondo, or The Cherry Blossom's Temperature, was produced by studio ufotable and released in 2011 as part of the Anime Mirai project, an initiative funded by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. The program was designed to encourage the training of young animators and preserve the artistry of domestic hand-drawn animation techniques during a period of rapid industry transition toward digital production.
The short film was directed by Takayuki Hirao, a filmmaker known for his distinctive visual storytelling and atmospheric pacing. The narrative serves as a meditative, poetic reflection on life and passing seasons, emphasizing the studio's hallmark attention to environmental detail and soft, evocative lighting. It was received as a technically accomplished showcase for the studio's emerging talent and remains a respected entry in the boutique catalogue of independent works commissioned by the Japanese government.
