SALARYMAN KINTARO

Salaryman Kintaro was produced by TBS in 2001 as a television adaptation of Hiroshi Motomiya’s long-running seinen manga series. The story centers on Kintaro Yajima, a former motorcycle gang leader who transitions into a white-collar corporate role after saving a high-ranking executive’s life. This narrative shift reflects the cultural anxieties of 1990s Japan, contrasting the rough-edged, rebellious spirit of the post-bubble generation with the rigid, traditional expectations of the salaryman lifestyle.

The 2001 series is recognized for its attempt to capture the gritty, populist appeal of the original source material. Motomiya’s design for the character emphasizes a raw, unconventional energy that disrupts the predictable hierarchies of the corporate world. While the production serves as a notable entry in the broader canon of workplace dramas, it is largely viewed as a vehicle for the themes of personal integrity and unconventional leadership that defined Motomiya’s work throughout the late twentieth century.
