Where it came from
Sakura Wars: The Radiant Gorgeous Blooming Cherry Blossoms, known in Japan as Sakura Taisen: Ouka Kenran, was released in 1999 as a four-part original video animation series. It serves as a narrative companion to the original 1996 Sega Saturn strategy role-playing game. The series was produced by Radix Ace Entertainment under the supervision of Sega, designed to deepen the character development of the Imperial Assault Force members amidst the steampunk-inspired Taisho-era setting of Tokyo.
The character designs were adapted from Kōsuke Fujishima’s original game illustrations, emphasizing the distinct aesthetic fusion of historical Meiji-era sensibilities and advanced mechanical elements. The project was conceived to satisfy the strong demand from fans for more character-focused storytelling, and it was generally well-received for its animation quality and its ability to capture the tone and musical spirit of the source material.
