Samurai Girl Real Bout High School

Samurai Girl Real Bout High School was produced by the animation studio GONZO and released in 2001. The series is based on the manga written by Reiji Saiga and illustrated by Sora Inoue, which centered on a high school student named Ryoko Mitsurugi who belongs to a traditional kendo dojo but finds herself caught in a bizarre world where school conflicts are settled through martial arts tournaments. The narrative emerged during a period of experimentation in the early 2000s anime industry, blending the aesthetic of high school drama with hyperbolic action sequences and a supernatural subculture.

The character designs were overseen to reflect the stylistic trends of the time, characterized by bold lines and a blend of traditional sword-fighting motifs with modern urban fashion. Produced under the direction of Hideki Tonokatsu, the series aimed to capture the energetic, fast-paced nature of its manga source material. While it gained a niche following among viewers interested in the fusion of school-life tropes and tournament-style combat, it was received as a moderate entry in GONZO’s extensive catalog, often noted more for its specific visual identity than its narrative complexity.
