Where it came from
Samurai Girls, known in Japan as Hyakka Ryoran Samurai Girls, was produced by the studio ARMS and released in 2010. The series is based on a light novel franchise written by Akira Suzuki and illustrated by Niθ. Set in an alternate history version of Japan where the Tokugawa shogunate never fell, the narrative revolves around historical figures reimagined as female samurai, reflecting a popular trend in 2010s anime of blending historical aesthetics with fantasy fan service.
The character designs by Niθ were central to the series' marketing, characterized by elaborate, ornate costumes and a distinct visual flair. Upon its release, the show was received primarily as a niche genre piece, noted by critics for its provocative animation style and focus on action-oriented spectacle. It remains a representative example of late-2000s and early-2010s light novel adaptations that prioritized stylized character art and the reimagining of historical tropes.
