Where it came from
Released in 1999 as a prequel to the popular Rurouni Kenshin television series, the Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal OVA was produced by Studio DEEN to explore the origins of the protagonist, Kenshin Himura. Unlike the lighter, action-oriented tone of the main series, this project was designed as a dark, atmospheric historical drama. It serves as a tragic meditation on the violence of the Bakumatsu period, shifting focus toward the psychological scars of the titular assassin.
Director Kazuhiro Furuhashi and character designer Akio Takami took a distinct departure from the original character designs found in Nobuhiro Watsuki’s manga. They opted for more realistic proportions and a muted, cinematic color palette to emphasize the gravity of the narrative. Upon its release, the project was critically lauded for its sophisticated animation and mature storytelling, ultimately becoming one of the most highly regarded entries in the franchise's history.
