Where it came from
San Jian Hao: Banmian Ren was produced by the Chinese animation studio STANDTOWER as a spin-off of the wuxia-themed San Jian Hao series. Released as an ONA (Original Net Animation), the series was designed to expand the franchise’s lore by focusing on the mysterious character known as Banmian Ren, or the Masked Man, whose enigmatic past and martial arts prowess served as a focal point for the narrative.
The animation reflects a stylistic effort to blend traditional wuxia storytelling with contemporary digital production techniques common in mid-2010s Chinese web animation. By centering the story on a mask-wearing vigilante, the creators leaned into themes of identity and moral ambiguity, aiming to provide a grittier look at the martial world than the primary series while catering to the growing domestic audience for streaming-exclusive episodic content.
