Where it came from
School's Scary Stories: Hanako-san ga kita!!, released in 2010, is an animated series based on the popular Japanese urban legend of the ghost haunting a school restroom. The series revitalized the classic Hanako-san folklore for a new generation, drawing on the long-standing cultural tradition of kaidan, or Japanese ghost stories, which have served as a source of childhood urban myth-making for decades.
The visual direction focuses on a minimalist, often unsettling aesthetic designed to evoke the atmosphere of traditional Japanese horror storytelling. By adapting these folk tales into short episodic formats, the production sought to bridge the gap between classic oral traditions and modern animation. It was received as a nostalgic yet chilling entry in the genre, appealing to audiences interested in the intersection of local folklore and contemporary media.
