Taking place 700 years after the Dunbine TV Series, "The Tale of Neo Byston Well" revolves around Shion Zaba, the reincarnation of series protagonist Sho Zama. Together with Silkie Mau, Reml Jilfried (the reincarnation of Remile Luft), and the Aura Battler Silbine, Shion must stop a twisted Shot Weapon from launching a custom-made nuclear ICBM missile that's poised to wipe out the realm.
"The Tale of Neo Byston Well" gained praise not only for its upgraded animation but also for using B-CLUB Magazine's popular AURA FANTASM series as the basis for the new Aura Battler designs.

Where it came from
Released in 1988, New Story of AURA BATTLER Dunbine serves as a three-part original video animation sequel to the 1983 Sunrise television series Aura Battler Dunbine. Set in the mystical realm of Byston Well, the OVA was produced during a period when the studio was actively revisiting its catalogue of fantasy-mecha hybrids. While the original series was noted for its dark, gritty tone and complex political narrative, the OVA shifts the focus toward a self-contained story that explores new characters while maintaining the organic, insect-like mecha aesthetic that defined the franchise's visual identity.
The character and mechanical designs carry the influence of the original series' artistic direction, emphasizing the bio-mechanical 'Aura Battler' aesthetic that distinguishes the show from standard robot anime. The project was intended to provide a follow-up for dedicated fans of the original world-building, though it was received with mixed sentiment due to its departure from the broader scope of the initial television run. Despite this, it remains a significant piece of 1980s Sunrise history, highlighting the studio's willingness to experiment with the high-fantasy subgenre of the mecha market.
