Where it came from
Seiren was produced by Studio Gokumi and broadcast in early 2017 as a spiritual successor to the omnibus-style romance series Amagami SS. Directed and written by Kisai Takayama, the creator of the original concept, the series continues the tradition of exploring multiple branching storylines that detail the protagonist's romantic development with different heroines. This structural approach was designed to replicate the interactive storytelling experience of visual novels, allowing for dedicated narrative arcs that provide emotional closure for each primary character.
The production sought to recapture the aesthetic and tonal nuances established in Takayama's previous works, focusing on a high school setting characterized by slice-of-life charm and sentimental romance. Upon its release, the series was received primarily by fans of the established Amagami franchise, drawing attention for its distinct episodic format and character-centric storytelling. While it was appreciated for its consistency with the developer's artistic vision, it was also viewed as a niche entry that leaned heavily into the tropes of the romantic omnibus genre.
