Sekai no Hikari: Shinran Shounin

Sekai no Hikari: Shinran Shounin is an animated feature produced in the early 1990s as a biographical depiction of Shinran, the 12th-century founder of the Jōdo Shinshū branch of Japanese Buddhism. Commissioned by the Hongan-ji temple organization, the project was intended to serve as a accessible educational tool to share the life and teachings of the founder with a modern audience, particularly younger generations who were increasingly detached from traditional religious storytelling.

The animation design was approached with a focus on historical gravity and clarity, aiming to synthesize traditional Buddhist iconography with the aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary cel animation.
