Selector Infected WIXOSS was produced by J.C.Staff in 2014 as a multimedia project designed to promote the real-world trading card game of the same name. Unlike typical card game tie-ins, the series is known for its psychological horror themes, subverting the magical girl genre by framing the card battles as high-stakes, life-altering struggles for the protagonists. The narrative focuses on the concept of 'LRIGs,' entities trapped within the cards, which serves as a central metaphor for the burdens of ambition and desire.

The series design and aesthetic, overseen by director Takuya Satō and series composer Mari Okada, were crafted to juxtapose the colorful, approachable art style of a collectible card game with a dark, often melancholic atmosphere.
