Senjou no Valkyria 3: Tagatame no Juusou

Senjou no Valkyria 3: Tagatame no Juusou was produced as a two-episode original video animation (OVA) by A-1 Pictures to coincide with the release of the PlayStation Portable game Valkyria Chronicles 3. Released in 2011, the project serves as a narrative companion to the game, focusing on the Nameless, a penal military unit within the Gallian army during the Second Europan War. The animation was created to expand upon the darker, more gritty tone of the third installment of the series, detailing the exploits of the unit as they undertake covert operations that regular army divisions cannot.

The character designs for the OVA were adapted from the series' signature watercolor-inspired aesthetic, famously established by illustrator Raita Honjou for the franchise. The production sought to maintain the visual fidelity of the game's cutscenes while providing a more fluid, cinematic experience for fans. Upon its release, the OVA was generally well-received by the established fanbase, appreciated for providing additional backstory to the game’s primary protagonists, Kurt Irving and Riela Marcellis, and for successfully translating the series' distinct tactical-military fantasy tone into a short-form animated format.
