Shadowverse

Shadowverse is a 2020 television anime series produced by the studio ZEXCS, based on the popular digital collectible card game developed by Cygames. The project was conceived as an entry point for a younger audience, translating the high-stakes tactical combat of the source material into a serialized narrative format centered on the protagonist Hiiro Ryugasaki. By moving away from the darker, gothic aesthetic of the original game, the series leaned into the conventions of the shonen genre, focusing on competitive tournament play and character-driven progression.

The character designs were handled by Hiroki Harada, who aimed to provide a fresh, vibrant visual identity that distinguished the show from the game’s existing promotional art. While the series was received with a mix of intrigue from the established fan base and curiosity from newcomers, it succeeded in its primary goal of expanding the reach of the franchise. It remains a notable example of a multimedia expansion that balances the mechanics of a complex digital game with the episodic structure of traditional animation.
