Set in a cave imagined as an air-raid shelter, images of the surrounding trees are painted over directly on the film. Vivid colors intermixed with the sound of wartime radio communications and bombing create a harmonious composition of documentary and animation.

Where it came from
Shelter, released in 2007, is a poignant independent romantic drama directed by Jonah Markowitz, who also wrote the screenplay. The film emerged from the vibrant tradition of early 21st-century queer cinema, aiming to present a grounded, character-driven story about self-discovery and the complexities of familial responsibility set against the backdrop of the Southern California surf culture.
The film was lauded for its authentic performances, particularly from leads Trevor Wright and Brad Rowe, and its atmospheric cinematography that captured the coastal aesthetic. While produced on a modest budget, Shelter found a dedicated audience through the festival circuit and home video, eventually earning a reputation as a hallmark of its genre for its earnest tone and nuanced exploration of personal identity.
