Shelter

Shelter was released in 2016 as a collaborative animated music video between Japanese animation studio A-1 Pictures and musician Porter Robinson. The project was conceived as a narrative extension of Robinson’s music, telling the story of Rin, a young girl living in a simulated futuristic world created by her father to keep her safe after a global catastrophe. The film was directed by Toshifumi Akai, who worked closely with Robinson to ensure the visual storytelling conveyed the intended sense of loneliness and emotional resonance.

The character designs were handled by Megumi Kouno, who aimed for a distinct aesthetic that blended the expressive qualities of modern anime with a melancholic, ethereal color palette. Upon its release, the video received widespread acclaim for its high production quality and its ability to communicate a poignant, character-driven story in under seven minutes. It became a notable example of the synergy between electronic music and contemporary animation, frequently cited by fans for its narrative depth and technical execution.
